You have probably noticed the strong and intense smell of fresh paint. The odors come from the VOCs that are in the paint, and it is the component that is the most harmful to the environment. It is important to use a low (or no) VOC or organic paint. These alternatives are water-based and release fewer toxic fumes than the traditional ones.
Recycle Your Paint
Check if your community offers a recycled paint program where you can donate leftover paint. Also check local schools, churches, and charities to see if they can find use for it. This is a great way to help out the community because paint can often times be very expensive.
Use High Quality Supplies
It is much more efficient to use high-quality brushes and rollers that can be reused many times, as opposed to throwing away inexpensive tools and re-buying them the next time around. So, the next time you”™re purchasing paint supplies, think about longevity and spend a couple extra bucks in support of the planet, and your pocketbook (in the long run!).
Dispose Properly
It is imperative to the environment that paint is disposed of properly. Never pour thinners, solvents, or paint down the drain. We suggest putting them in tight-fitting jars or cans and having them picked up or delivered to your local hazardous waste disposal site.
Store Excess Paint Properly
You will get more bang for your buck when you store your paint properly for re-use. Always store paint in a dry location where the temperature is above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Replace the lid and close firmly, storing the can upside down to prevent air from entering the container. This will help it last longer.
